The success of international Air New Zealand flights to and from Auckland in 2012 and 2013 has resulted in a strong commitment from the airline for future direct services.  Over the next three years, the length of seasonal services will be extended and frequency increased. The 2014 season will again run from June to October, with three flights a week during the peak period on Sundays, Tuesdays and a new Friday service added. The remainder of the season offers twice weekly flights on Sundays and Fridays. Next year will involve 42 return trips over 17 weeks, with the 2015/16 season extending to 28 weeks and the 2016/17 season at 30 weeks from June to January. The 2014 season commences on Friday 27 June.

The results of the latest Sunshine Coast Business Confidence Survey show a vast improvement in local business confidence when compared to results six months ago. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the survey results are a positive spark of optimism reflecting some of the national data coming through in recent times. “The strongest sign of local business confidence in recent times was demonstrated in the forecasts over the coming six months, with 61% of Sunshine Coast businesses saying they expect trading conditions to be either ‘somewhat or much stronger,” said the Mayor. “However it has been a tough couple of years, with many businesses hurting for some time, so let’s all get behind this recovery to help it truly take off.” A closer look at the survey data revealed that local businesses expect business performance to improve on the back of stronger profitability, and to a lesser extent increased capital expenditure.  Each time the survey is conducted it tackles one of the big iss...

An impressive 126 finalists have been selected from more than 400 original nominations in the 19th 2013 Sunshine Coast Business Awards(SCBA).  Finalists will now undergo a rigorous, three-tier judging process that includes an onsite interview, mystery shop and reference checks by an independent panel of judges. Businesses and individuals from all over the region comprise this year’s finalist selection from Caloundra to Cooroy, Beerwah to Buderim, Maleny to Maroochydore and beyond. Demonstrating the diversity of businesses operating from the Coast, finalists include a pet food manufacturer, a surfing school, a dance studio, a cleaning company, a radiology clinic, an engineering firm, a boutique hotel chain and a Feijoa fruit grower amongst others. The State Government has announced legislation enabling the handover of state land upon which Sunshine Coast Airport stands, to Sunshine Coast Council. Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney has unveiled the Queensland Government Airport Directions Statement, which outlines the future for airports throughout the state, and which will enable Sunshine Coast Airport to more easily attract investment. This announcement acts as an enabler for council to seek financial investment capital to fund the construction of the new runway, and backs up what is already designated a State Significant Project. Council will also be able to execute leases to tenants which will encourage further jobs growth in the important high-quality aviation sector. The Sunshine Coast would live up to its name by tapping into the energy of the sun. The Sunshine Coast Council would be the first council to build a solar farm at utility scale in Australia. It would be potentially the largest in the nation. Council is currently calling for expressions of interest, to confirm cost and benefit estimates. While there are many challenges to be met, council is on track to begin construction in 2014. Benefits The solar farm will deliver a multi-million-dollar saving for ratepayers. The solar farm will help develop the ‘cleantech’ industry hub on the Coast. Skills developed during construction can be exported to similar projects within and outside Queensland. This will further diversify the local economy. Location The solar farm is to be built at Valdora near Coolum and would meet half of council’s electricity needs for at least the next 30 years.

Important changes will be made to the Sunshine Coast bus network in late 2013. Of the 27 existing bus routes, 25 will change. Visit the  TransLink  for more information.
