Airport targets mining and business travellers

Sunshine Coast Airport has launched its latest survey, and this year it’s online to make it more convenient for everyone to participate.

The survey focuses heavily on capturing the demands of the business traveller, and coast residents who are working in the mining sector - particularly regular fliers on fly-in/fly-out rotation. Sunshine Coast Airport recognises that members of the Sunshine Coast business community have one topic that is first and foremost on their minds – the need for business-friendly flight schedules from Sunshine Coast Airport. They are also increasingly aware of the number of people who reside on the coast, and travel by air regularly to work in the mining sector.

As the airport continues to work with airlines with the end goal of introducing business-friendly flight schedules and more destinations, they require targeted, vital information from coast executives and business people on their wants, needs and desires. The results from such feedback will form additional support and the foundations of a business case to secure much needed business-friendly flights for the Sunshine Coast region. To complete the survey, visit Sunshine Coast Airport website and use the survey button at the bottom of the homepage.

Sunshine Coast Airport already has strong demand as demonstrated in the results of their annual Passenger Survey and wider Catchment Area Survey (2010), and their efforts are ongoing to ensure they have up to the minute research and support. The survey is also designed to capture the needs and wants of the leisure traveller, and Sunshine Coast Airport encourages everyone from the Sunshine Coast region to participate.

A snapshot of results from the Sunshine Coast Business (qualitative) Focus Group in December 2010 shows:
  • 83% nominated Sydney as their main business destination. Melbourne came in at 13% as a first preference. There was also a lot of demand for northern flights such as Rockhampton and Townsville.
  • 71% of participants fly for business purposes on average 1-4 times/month … 22% 5-8 times/month.
  • 60% of businesses have 1-2 staff flying for business/month. 25% have 3-4 staff.
